Abstract
Caterpillar is still reportedly the world's biggest manufacturer of construction plant and equipment. Despite threats to this position by companies such as Komatsu of Japan, Cat continues to develop new products and broaden its range of applications as the international plant business gets tougher. At Malaga, on the southern tip of Spain, Cat maintains a proving and demonstration ground which is the envy of heavy plant manufacturers all over the world. A large party of potential customers for Cat equipment was recently treated to a four-day presentation by one of the UK's main dealers, H. Leverton and Company, at Malaga. A limited number of press representatives - including Paul O'Farrell - were also invited to this function to see for themselves Caterpillar's range of equipment. Every item of plant currently manufactured by the company was on display, including the most recent additions to the range. Apart from the new wheeled loader, designated the 936, Cat displayed for the first time its new range of hydraulic excavators. These differ from other models in that they are manufactured by Eder of West Germany but marketed in Caterpillar livery under the terms of a unique agreement reached between the two companies.
