Abstract
When BHP set the criteria for its twelfth BHP Australian Steel Awards, the company had some lofty ideals in mind. Buildings would be awarded for their sculptural, environmental or cultural achievements and their innovative use of steel. Hopefully these winning designs would lead to improved buildings or living conditions. Risks associated with the construction and maintenance of the structure had to be reduced to a minimum and the structure had to be a useful and affordable solution to the client's needs. The design also had to incorporate sound engineering design and ergonomics, relate to its environment, reduce environmental hazards, and manage sun, wind and water.
