Abstract
Hong Kong has one of the most beautiful harbours and skylines in the world. Over the past decades it has achieved tremendous economic and financial growth, yet there have been warnings that Hong Kong's less than perfect environment might make it increasingly difficult to attract overseas corporations to come to Hong Kong to establish in the territory. Construction is an indispensable part of growth and development, yet one with implications for the environment. The Architectural Services Department, as the Government's architect responsible for the construction of all community facilities, has an important role to play in securing a sustainable development for the future. The presentation will cover: Current strategies to promote environmental sustainability in construction Goals of high-performance building and ArchSD's actions taken to achieve them Illustrations of ArchSD's sustainable design projects, including recently completed projects and those currently under planning/construction Visions for the future (1) Strategies to achieve sustainable development (2) Innovative green design (3) Extensive use of landscaping (4) Maintenance and upgrading of existing buildings (5) Implementation of environmental site management (6) Achievements and future goals (a) Improve building envelope design to minimise OTTV (b) Reduce the use of depletable materials such as tropical hardwood or HCFC, etc. (c) Improvement of indoor air quality (d) Water conservation (e) Reduce paper consumption (f) Utilisation of modern technologies to enhance energy efficiency (7) Use of renewable energy (8) Looking forward
