Abstract
A welcome oasis of spontaneity and eccentricity in Singapore's more monotonous cityscape, Bugis Street was levelled six years ago to make way for an MRT Station. But its spirit did not die. Eventually Singaporean authorities sanctioned the reconstruction of the neighbourhood. Ken Barrett recently visited Singapore where he spoke to the project's senior manager to discover how much of the area's celebrated character will be recreated in the new Bugis Street.
