Abstract
Year 2001 marks the one and a half century development of Hong Kong's water supply. Hong Kong has a total area of 1,098 sq km which houses a population of some 6.8 million. There is no major lake, river or underground water source within the territory. Prior to 1960, all the fresh water demand was met by collection of the runoff from rain. In 1960, Hong Kong started to import raw water from the neightbouring Guangdong Province in the Mainland China. Today water from Guangdong is the major source of supply accounting for about 80% of the total consumption.
