Abstract
During the past year a number of technical developments in computer hardware and software have combined to open many new possibilities in computer applications to small contractors. As an owner or manager of a firm in the construction field, you have most certainly been aware of computer applications that have been developed and used successfully by larger firms. You may also have felt the increased competition from these computerised organisations and their new machines. Some of these firms have had painful encounters with computerised systems; we have all heard the horror stories, and they sometimes seem to equal the number of success stories. While caution is always advised in considering changes in your management procedures, this article seeks to inform you about a combination of developments that may provide answers to your questions about using a computer to increase productivity and profitability in these difficult economic times.
