Abstract
The Pawson Williams partnership took root in London when Terry Pawson and Keith Williams were fresh-faced students at the University of Kingston. They went on to become professional colleagues whilst working for Terry Farrell before setting up their own practice in 1987. Without trying to pin too specific a tag on the duo's work, it's been said that their projects pursue a more European rather than simply British tradition. This could go some way towards explaining their recent competition success with the Sergels Torg Square civic project in Stockholm.
The practice applies the notion of 'contextual minimalism' to its work - whether monumental institutional buildings or master plan development frameworks. To Pawson Williams, minimalism means "crafting a thing to its essence without ironing out the complexity of life". Without doubt, contextualism, both cultural and physical, is fundamental to their work. The architecture exhibits avid attention to human scale, history and site context, while upholding quality of form, proportion and light to an extraordinary standard.
