Abstract
London is no stranger to large-scale national celebrations. The Dome's ancestor, Crystal palace was the major attraction of the Great Exhibition of 1851. A hundred years later the Royal Festival Hall was built as part of the 1852 Festival of Britain celebrations. The Millennium Dome, it is hoped, will rank alongside these landmark events, both in architectural and historical terms and, similarly, be a showcase to Britain's achievements both past and present. Annabel Macki picks up the story.
