Abstract
Megacities are emerging in Asia at a rate that bewilders western societies, writes DR Q M MAHTAB-UZ-ZAMAN. In 1950, there were only two so-called megacities - New York and London. Today, developing countries accommodate the majority: 28 megacities have been identified from which 22 are located in developing countries. These were just a few of the startling facts that emerged at the international conference Megacities 2000 organised by the Centre of Architecture and Urban Design for China and Hong Kong (organised by Assoc Prof Stephen Lau and Dr Q M Mahtab-uz-Azman), Department of Architecture, University of Hong Kong. Held over three days from 8-10 February, the programme played host to key participants from four cities: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Tokyo. (1) Kuala Lumpur Linear City, Malaysia (2) Putrajaya Garden City, Malaysia (3) Urban challenges in Hong Kong: future directions for design (4) Megacities - a need for new paradigms for urban design and sustainability?
