Abstract
The newly-built Shanghai American School is an extremely salient example of modern architecture incorporating aeons of historical and cultural ideology into its design. Jerry Yin, one of the principle architects involved in the project, discusses what he and his team set out to achieve - how they researched it - and how Chinese tradition, Confucianism, Taoism and garden design, were considered and implemented into the final campus. The result is a very 'Chinese' modern building in that most modern of all China's ancient cities - Shanghai.
