Abstract
Play has always been essential to a child's healthy growth, aiding in the development of social, motor, logical and imaginative skills. In many Asian cities, due to densely crowded living environments, areas designated as communal play spaces are precious.
Although play is partially a spontaneous process, the careful design, designation and location of play areas can enhance the child's natural tendency to play.
Ian Lyne, Chairman of the Hong Kong Landscape Group, reviews the notion of play and calls for a more researched, objective process for the planning of play areas in Hong Kong.
