Abstract
Seventy years ago, this was an idyllic spot: a sheltered, wooded valley, opening up to a view of Hong Kong harbour and the hills of Kowloon beyond. It caught the eye of an entrepreneur, Aw Boon Haw, who liked to build. The Haw Par Mansion and the uninhibited Tiger Balm Garden that he built share many characteristics with their creator. Both were colourful, famous and progressive, despite traditional appearances. Both were the product of tumultuous times.
