Abstract
The best views of the Standard Chartered Bank building are from Statue Square, which reveals the grace and symmetry of its angular facade, and looking back from west along De Voeux Road Central, which reveals the power of the vertical rectangle-turned-stepped-pyramid shape.
Clad in granite coloured in subtle tones of pink, the building achieves an elegance and warmth that contrasts with the severity of its Modernist-era neighbours and directness of its high-tech next-door neighbour.
Unfortunately, the building is a victim of the Hong Kong passion for immortalising the "Manhattan Effect." But, by standing back as far as the pile-on-pile of nearby buildings permits, the observer gets the sense that this is indeed an extraordinary structure.
