Abstract
In a fit of pique following a lost bid for a job, an interior designer once said to me, "if you've got a Pen, a Mandarin Oriental or a Regent in your portfolio, you're made. But if you've not got one; you're not likely to." At the time I just nodded sympathetically, but later I thought back to what he might have meant by this dramatic declaration. Did he mean that doing a job for one of these hotels was some kind of measure of achievement, like gaining an Olympic Gold? … That in the eyes of prospective clients the exceptional standards of quality associated with these hotels are somehow conferred to the designer by working for them? … Or that work for hotel groups is something of a 'closed shop' in that it is very difficult to gain a commission for one of them unless you have a proven track record in this kind of top class hotel work?
