Abstract
Man has always been fascinated by the creation of tall structures, from pyramids and pagodas which reflect ancient beliefs and customs, through the towers of San Gimigiano, to the modern skyscrapers which meet a different range of cultural aspirations and economic values.
The Centre for Asian Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has recently been established at the University of Hong Kong. This event is the culmination of several years' preparatory work by a local committee with membership drawn from professional, academic and industry circles. The establishment of the Centre is a response to the rapid rate of growth in South-East Asia and concerns about the future growth of our cities. This growth has led to land use policies and patterns of development which accommodate increasing numbers of tall buildings for residential, commercial and other uses.
