Abstract
The new building for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art designed by Swiss Architect Mario Botta has been variously praised for revitalising a downtown street, which (wrote Allan Temko in San Francisco Focus, Jan 1995) had been "razed and left for dead by 'urban renewal"; and criticised for being a "hermetic design that seems more a relic of 1980's elitism than a good neighbour" (Progressive Architecture Feb 1995). Love it or hate it, one cannot deny its distinctive presence.
