Abstract
Metropolis Peru, headed by Jose Orrego, is one of those small-to-medium firms whose mark can be found everywhere, from private residences and education facilities to convenience stores and fastfood joints. And that mark, as evidenced by Metropolis’ pied portfolio – which includes shopping malls, offices and cemeteries – is not some visually discernible style that neatly pigeon-holes the Lima-based firm, but rather a confident mastery off materiality, proportion and colour, no matter the client directive. Its beach houses wear versions of mid-century modernism that are quietly striking while eschewing unnecessary theatrics in scale and shape in favour of an appropriate emphasis on capturing the environs for the end-user. Meanwhile, the firm’s commissions for fastfood franchises and supermarkets, which have become icons on the Peruvian commercial landscape in much the same way their North American counterparts have all over the world, aptly buzz with seductive vitality, eye-popping colour and whimsical form. Embodying over 20 years of experience, Metropolis’ manifest command of manifold styles (at times it even adopts elements of the vernacular architecture) and programmes has unsurprisingly made it one of the white-hot architecture firms in Peru today.
