Abstract
To architect Kenneth Chau of CYS Associates (Hong Kong) Ltd, the Eaton Hotel-Astor Plaza development was more than the creation of a hotel-shopping arcade structure. It was an exercise in urban design. Aiming to achieve a visual harmony with the surrounding area, Mr Chau first constructed a model of the neighbourhood to study the project's massing, design approach and environmental impact. It was effective in providing the basis for the design. However, development of the detailed design was not so easy, as the structure had to fit an irregular site and his creation accommodate a hotel, cinemas, retail shopping arcades and restaurants. There was also a requirement that the end-product replace community facilities and provide for a future extension of the hotel.
