Abstract
Except where they act as resonance chambers and are poorly sealed, voids are very good at preventing impact noises from passing through. Fibrous material is even better, as resonance cannot take place in it. One of the most troublesome noises in flats arises from people walking on the floor above, and while furnishings have an effect, building design cannot be on the basis that the floors of flats will always have ankle deep carpets.
