Abstract
Dennis Lau and Ng Chun Man Architects and Engineers (Hong Kong) Ltd (DLN) was established in Hong Kong in 1972 at the time of the territory’s transition into a modern cosmopolitan city. Since that time the firm has been fully engaged in the market, first in Hong Kong, then as a pioneering practice in Mainland China, and now throughout the region. DLN’s projects area emblematic of Hong Kong’s energy and resourcefulness. Hong Kong, with its high development intensity and demanding commercial environment, has proved to be a superb incubator of innovation, giving rise to DLN commissions of great scale and complexity such as the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the ATL Logistics Centre and the Highcliff tower. The stringent demands of Hong Kong have provided solid preparation for entry into non-domestic markets. DLN is active in various South-East and Central-Asian countries and throughout Mainland China where the company maintains branch offices in Shenzhen and Beijing. DLN’s practice covers most building types, ranging from luxury hotels and apartments to office campuses, super-tall buildings, convention centres, university buildings, hospitals, industrial structures and logistics centres. Very large composite urban developments, that add value to office, retail, residential, hotel and transport functions through combining them, are an important specialization. Without exception DLN’s design services are practical responses to clients’ needs, whereby efficiency, amenity, and beauty are maximised within the means available. The practice sees no conflict between utility and poetry in architecture and indeed believes that they should be synonymous.
