Abstract
There have always been several Shanghais. European expatriates saw it as a Western city, the rich and fashionable thought it chic, the poor as the cradle of the working class.
Yet, never more than now does Shanghai exist in a kaleidoscope of contradicting images. On the one hand there is the sepia-tinted image of old Shanghai, a noble aristocrat with a glorious past, the art-deco a little shabby around the edges, perhaps, but elegant and dignified nonetheless. Then there is the Shanghai we are currently being marketed; a dynamic, modern commercial city with all the latest buildings, infrastructure and technology. Finally, there is an image of Shanghai as a chaotic, dusty construction site, with completed buildings turning out to be so badly designed and constructed that they contain less than 50 per cent usable space. Which (if any) is the real Shanghai?
