Abstract
In October 1989, the plan to construct a new airport at Chek Lap Kok was announced by the Hong Kong Government as a part of an overall port and airport development strategy.
The Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) at north Lantau, which officially opened for commercial operations on July 6 1998, rapidly becomes a vital component of Hong Kong's economy, serving both tourism and commerce. Its strategic position in Asia has made it an important regional trans-shipment centre, passenger hub and gateway to Mainland China and the world.
