Abstract
Life can be said to have a cosmic quality. We believe now it can originate anywhere in the universe, given certain preconditions. Life is briefly held by individuals, but its main characteristics are transpersonal. It is passed on and evolves.
Consciousness, by contrast, is supremely personal. It begins when the first memories are laid down in the evolution of the infact brain, and it deepens with the fashioning of subjective world. It requires two things: a brain that is highly reflective, and a renewable, accessible store of memories. Neither of these appears to exist beyond the two ends of our life-span. We are born and we die unconscious.
