Abstract
Cochinchina, meaning center of Vietnam in French, refers to the French military victory over Vietnam in 1883. The era also marked the beginning of French cultural penetration and the puppet reign of the young Vietnamese king. History is evidenced in the design of Cochinchina 1883, a Vietnamese restaurant, located in a British-style building in the Nanjing military district of Shanghai.
Indeed, Cochinchina 1883 is more than a mirror of colonialism to Shanghai residents. It involved restructuring the British architecture and designing a new French colonial-style Vietnamese restaurant.
