Abstract
Despite its political and geographical independence, Australia's construction industry has no escaped the impact of the world recession. With overall cutbacks in both public and private developments and the tight hold that the trade union movement still exerts over the industry, Australia has had its fair share of building problems. However, with Australia's bicentenary looming close in 1988, new projects are in store. These, combined with the more adventurous spirits of some of the larger contracting companies to try their skills abroad, particularly in S.E. Asia, are lifting up the industry down under. Ed.
