Abstract
As a country, Canada has never coalesced into the "melting pot" society like that of the United States, preferring continuance of nation-bulding through the adoption of a mosaic of native and immigrant cultures. Thus, any commission to design a museum to interpret the country's heritage could only be a challenge to the architect, especially if the structure must house some 3.5million objects in 17 museums scattered throughout the Canadian federal capital of Ottawa, Ontario. It was in this complex context that Alberta-born architdect Douglas Cardinal designed a building that he says "truly aspires to be an artifact of our time."
