Abstract
As part of Le French May 1998 annual arts festival, the Service Cultural et Scientifique of the Consulate General of France together with the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, organised a half-day seminar in conjunction with an exhibition held in partnership with the Provisional Urban Council. The event unravelled a series of monumental public facilities and urban infrastructure projects in France and Asia. It has been touring Asia since December 1997, more recently moving on to Shanghai. Searching for universal solutions through an understanding of different urban situations formed the premise of this collaboration. Despite its eclipse by the astounding 1998 World Cup win coupled with the Bastille Day celebrations, hinge invited Jeffrey Cody, associate professor at the Department of Architecture, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Fabien Ansel from the Cultural Service of the Consulate General of France, to assess the key issues of the day.
