Abstract
A garden is a garden is a garden, undeniably (to paraphrase Gertrude Stein's infamous "rose" quotation). But a Chinese garden is something more. One can add "garden" upon "garden" in expanding waves of consciousness, until the original experience of three-dimensional space becomes merely the first stage of a deeply rewarding progression into pleasure, serenity and, finally, enlightenment. (1) Seasonal variations (2) Weather and time of day (3) The play of light and shade and shadow (4) Animal life (5) The five senses
