Abstract
Remember Lego? Those robust colourful blocks which enabled us to build as far and wide as gravitation would allow. There is a school of though which purports that we are all born builders. A trip to the tiny island of Shek Kwu Chau, half an hour's boat ride from the coast of Cheung Chau, might just provide substance to that argument. Light years away from the orbit of Hong Kong's building regulations and planning guidelines, the do-it yourself constructions which shelter the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre of the Society for the Aid and Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers (SARDA) have all been built by the community of patients and their supervisors. Farming vegetables, raising goats and pigs or fishing and swimming are all part of the daily routine, as is sleeping under the stars or lighting a barbecue on the doorstep of a lush garden facing a blossoming lotus pond. This is no fictional fairytale.
