Abstract
Two Hong Kong buildings are among the winning entries honoured by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation ) Asia-Pacific Heritage 2000 Awards. Selected by an international jury, 'Outstanding Project' awards were presented to the Ohel Leah Synagogue and the Hung Shing Temple in February. In his award citation, Richard Engelhardt, Regional Advisor for Culture in Asia and the Pacific, referred to Asia's threat from "forces of modernisation and globalisation" and explained how the Awards were established to recognise and pay tribute to the vision of those who have contributed to making sure the past survives intact into the future. The judges particularly commended Hong Kong's projects for their success in a situation where the forces of urban redevelopment make heritage conservation very difficult.
