Abstract
The Japanese solution to the problem of making the most effective use of inner-city space has been to concentrate business and housing into ever-higher skyscrapers. To facilitate this, development of elevators for these structures is concentrating on minimizing shaft space and redefining traditioanl suspension methods - the ropeless linear drive elevator is a possible future slolution which is not as far away as many would imagine.
