Abstract
The recently completed Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) is the third and largest tunnel to be constructed between Hong Kong Island and the rest of the territory. It is also the first in South East Asia allowing three lanes of traffic to travel in each direction. The 2 km-long tunnel, with its daily capacity of 180,000 vehicles (50 per cent greater then either of the existing tunnels), links Sai Ying Pun on the Island to the West Kowloon Reclamation.
