Abstract
Established in 1990 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, the firm's architecture reflects the human and emotional character of Japan, filtered through a disciplined Western intelligence. They describe the Klein Dytham approach as "open minded and rigorously undogmatic", allowing "thoughtful accommodation of seemingly contradictory points of view and divergent realities." Selective in its client relationships, the firm prefers working with those who understand that good architecture often requires in depth exploration and experimentation substantially beyond the consideration of merely functional issues. Characteristic and aims of Klein Dytham's work incorporate: environments with an enveloping sense of physical and psychological lightness; a positive concern with the flow and meaning of the contemporary cultural moment as interpreted in three-dimensional structures; an interest in pushing the most appropriate technologies, be they high or low, to their limits; and architecture as an opportunity to enlighten.
