Abstract
Expo '85 opened at Tsukuba Science City in Japan on 17 March to a first day turnout of 81,000 visitors. Exhibits from 47 countries and 37 international organisations were on show at the US$2.3 billion site. Bevis England visited the site prior to its' opening and reports on some of the new aspects in designing for 'temporary architecture' that have been utilised in preparing the pavilions for Japan's Expo extravaganza.
