Abstract
The Brief to RMJM Hong Kong Ltd architects and planners was, in quintessential Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club style, direct and to the point. Under this directive, the architect's design for the replacement Upper Happy Valley Clubhouse Development and Park was to produce "one of the best private clubs in the Southeast Asia region … an exceptional leisure facility in an in-town location" with a "controversial design that was neither Chinese nor ultra-modern." The resulting 14,728-sq m GFA building employs a vocabulary that is both sympathetic with architectural traditions of the region and sensitive to its immediate surrounds.
