Abstract
"I feel what makes designers, Designer, is that they are visual thinkers. Whatever they do, they ultimately have to express their ideas in physical form. If you don’t have a vivid visual imagery in your mind, you are not operating in a designer's mode"
Tony Sin was responsible for setting up the Science Museum in Hong Kong and has been Head of the Design Department at the Hong Kong Trade Council (HKTDC) for one year. In that time he has reorganised, reshuffled and revived the Design Department beyond recognition, both physically and in spirit. A new office layout structured in the stream-lined form of a boat is intended to open up lines of communication and foster confidence in themselves as a design team. A three year plan assembled from suggestions by the team is prominently displayed in the wall alongside bright and attractive presentations of the department's award-winning designs. A new dynamic logo entitled 'flagship Hong Kong" flashes boldy across one wall. Thanks to Tony Sin, the Design Department of the HKTDC is going places - and fast.
In an interview with Tony Sin, Hinge found out the influences that guided his career choice, where he studied and the path of employment that led him to his present position. In the first of this two-part series, Mr Sin talks about the influences of his childhood and his education.
