Abstract
Mike Tonkin is the founder and principal architect of tonkin design [hong kong] and tonkin architects [london]. The practice, established in 1990, intends to bring an original combination of poetry and practicality to the field of architecture and interior design. Combining creativity with functionalism, it aims to offer design solutions specific to each client's aspirations. The company's workload ranges from private houses, offices, hotels, to shops, cinemas, restaurants, furniture, and landscapes. (1) So Mike, where exactly are you from? (2) Does design run in the family? (3) So you began thinking about design at an early age? (4) Where did your formal training take place? (5) Who were your architectural influences during those years? (6) Was there any aspects of your training that you endured? (7) What did you do after graduating? (8) So what stopped you? (9) Is that what brought you to Hong Kong? (10) Have there been any major frustrations for you? (11) How did you win the bigger clients in the end? (12) You've done some teaching here haven't you? (13) What do you still want to achieve? (14) Is that because you're now being recognised by your peers? (15) Any advice for graduating students of architecture?
