Abstract
Disneyland is coming to Hong Kong; a project controversial not just for its financial implications but also for its all-American iconography. Theming raises strong emotions, both for and against and not just in Hong Kong. Around the world, this is now a growing technique of design for the built environment, though not one which many architects either use or approve of. Is theming the future of design? Is it a passing fashion? hinge magazine and Messe Frankfurt set out to explore this through the medium of the forthcoming ThemeWorks symposium in Hong Kong on 26 October 2000 and RALPH THOMAS weights up what some of the event's participants have to say.
