Abstract
Located in Shenzhen's Overseas Chinese Town (OCT), the He Xiangning Art Gallery is the first national art gallery dedicated to a single personality and is China's second national modern museum. He Xiangning (1878-1972) is considered to be one of China's most influential female avant-garde painters, having trained in Japan and later lived in Paris. Her grandson, discovering a quantity of her paintings at the family home spared by a recent fire, felt that the impressive body of work was in need of a permanent home. An application to build a national memorial museum in Shenzhen was approved by the Central Government and construction was completed in April 1997, with President Jiang Zemin personally inscribing the gallery's name.
