Abstract
How many lighting designers does it take to change a bulb? A lot, apparently, but not for the punchline of a joke; lighting design is forever evolving, and style has to keep on the move to keep up with - and incorporate - technological change. It's a field tasked with inventing something most people don't want to see, yet require (to allow them to see everything else). Thus either a healthy modesty, or a healthier creativity would be called for. Luckily, the latter is more often the result. Developments in the 'mechanics' of the field mean that increasing choices are available to architects and designers, with features and in sizes they can more easily include and/or conceal. Some of them look so good they'll want people to notice.
