Abstract
Alfredo Queirolo de Armenteras is a young practicing architect form San Isidro in Peru. He graduated from Ricardo Plama University Faculty of Architecture and City Planning in 1988, having completed his thesis titled A Critical Vision of Le Corbusier's influence in Peru. In a country where the relationship between the ocean and The Andes creates a unique coastal environment, Querolo's architecture attempts to interpret that. He describes this enormous sand mass which has resulted in a wide desert strip, as a limbo, a space between two worlds. His work, he says, also reflects his long-term interest in figures from Peruvian mythology such as the Andean Painted Devils and nail heads which are engraved outside the walls of fortresses to protect the territory. In addition, the colonial Spanish plus the historical presence of various religions have left their influences on these icons. The end result is a residential and community architecture that is humanised by cultural meaning and naturalised through its resemblance to natural formations.
