Abstract
Healthcare is a hot topic in Hong Kong these days. Both public and private healthcare providers are mulling over ways to deal with rising costs and competition in the market; patients are increasingly demanding better service; and new diseases and lifestyle issues challenge the sector to stay abreast of the latest treatment methods and technologies. The design of healthcare facilities has also evolved in recent years. According to the Architectural Services Department (ArchSD), growing environmental awareness has led to more effort being devoted to the design of energy-efficient, sustainable healthcare facilities. At the same time, a customer-oriented culture encouraged by the Hospital Authority (HA) has led to more patient-focused design. Flexibility and adaptability have also come to the fore, in response to the demand imposed by the needs of changing demographics and medical advances. Three recent projects designed by ArchSD for the HA demonstrate these trends. (1) Fanling Priority Healthcare Centre (2) Caritas Medical Centre (3) Kowloon Hospital Phase 1
