Abstract
Experience has proved that building new roads to meet a city's transport needs only encourages more people to use the roads, leading to more emissions into the air without relieving any of the congestion. Governments worldwide are encouraging the public to utilise their transport. And the public as a whole are recognising that there are major environmental benefits to be gained from maximising the use of public transport. Using electrified railways as the backbone of public transport is currently being looked at as the most efficient way of moving large numbers of commuters in a timely, cost effective and environemtally friendly manner, and one of the best solutions to today's transport problems. AAC gives you an update on Hong Kong's West Rail project in our two part KCRC special. Part I the architecture. PartII, in our next issue, will cover the complex components that are part of this major project. (1) A tremendous challenge (2) Tunnelling well underway (3) On track in 2000
