Abstract
The world has long been captivated by Japanese architecture, but being able to pinpoint precisely what it is that causes such fascination is a different matter. When introducing a rare public lecture by Shigeru Ban at University of Hong Kong recently (part of a series on Japanese architecture), even architecture department head Professor Richard Frewer was brave enough to admit that he wasn't sure. Our connection with Japanese architecture is mostly limited to books and pictures so when Shigeru Ban, Kengo Kuma and Tom Heneghan touched down in February, the architecture community was given a good shaking.
