Abstract
In the 1960s, the phrase "urban renewal" became the watchword for the inner cities of the United States, as governmental organisations endeavoured to cleanse their city scapes of obsolete buildings and pump in new life via construction projects. Here in Hong Kong, a similar pattern emerged in the 1980's as many of the buildings erected in the 50s and 60s began to outgrow their usefulness and show signs of aging. The main agent behind urban renewal in Hong Kong is the Land development Corporation (LDC; see page 40). The LDC has proven expert at untangling the web of multiple building ownership in Hong Kong's crowded urban environment and clearing suitable space for new projects.
