Abstract
Slope repair is important in such a hilly and congested place as Hong Kong. The responsibility for policing slope safety in Hong Kong is held by the Geotechnical Engineering Office(GEO). Formerly called the Geotechnical Control Office (GCO), the GEO was established by the government in 1977 on the recommendation of the Independent Review Panel on Fill Slopes set up following the Sau Mau Ping landslip disaster of August 1976. According to information from GEO, there are about 54,000 registered slopes in the SAR. After the output of a five-year accelerated Landslip Preventive Measures Works(LPM) programme ending in March 2000, a new 10-year LPM project will be carried out.
