Abstract
Gammon Construction Ltd's involvement in Hong Kong goes back to 1955, when Gammon Malaya gained the contract for the construction of the runway at Kai Tak Airport.
In 1958, Gammon was set up as a separate company to undertake work in Hong Kong. This led to more major civil engineering contracts and foundation works, as well as contracts for a number of prestigious buildings.
In 1969, Jardine Matheson bought a minority shareholding in the company and, in April of that year, Gammon became a public-listed company. In 1975, Jardine acquired the remainder of the shareholding, thereby making Gammon a wholly-owned subsidiary.
In 1978, Gammon's building division merged with the highly-successful Gammon-Swire Joint Venture, which had been formed to construct the enormous Taikoo Shing residential development. The company was named Gammon Building Construction Ltd and was jointly owned by Gammon (Hong Kong) Ltd and Swire Properties Ltd.
In 1983, Jardine signed an agreement for the sale of 50% of Gammon (Hong Kong) Ltd to Trafalgar House, a UK-based company engaged in consruction, shipping and property.
By this agreement, Gammon (Hong Kong) Ltd became, for the two shareholders, the operating company in the Asia-Pacific Region, providing comprehensive construction services, including inter-alia foundations, building, civil engineering, refurbishment, interior fitting-out and landscaping.
In 1985, the Swire Properties share in Gammon Building Construction Ltd was acquired and, in 1987, the name of the company was changed to Gammon Construction Ltd to reflect its growing regional presence.
