Abstract
Jane Jacob's Death and Life of Great American Cities was published in 1961, virtually at a time when new planned urban environments seemed to reflect unambiguous and direct lineage from Le Corbusier's Ville Radieuse theories.
Le Corbusier preached against the evils of the street and general untidiness of the normal urban fabric and paid homage to the straight line - both horizontal and vertical.
Jacobs' book, which was to have a profound impact on urban thinking and lead to a gradual rejection by urban planners of such brave new worlds, was essentially a treatise on the street fabric as representing the interest and vitality of the city itself.
