Abstract
Retail design in Hong Kong has, overall, been restricted to two mainstreams: superchic and barely functional. The former category applies to "name" boutiques and some top echelon speciality shops such as antiques, art or furnitures and accessories. And, unfortunately, until very recently, the latter, to the rest. (With the only major exception being the frankly colourful, either intentionally, for tourism purposes, or simply unwittingly.) However, the advent of Japanese retailing operations - and their outstanding success - has forced the local market to reassess their priorities - if not their very survival. Fortunately, some retail giants have reacted very swiftly indeed and a just-completed design project for Fortress Ltd (a leading retail electronics chain which is a division of the Hutchison empire) by the Hong Kong firm of Concept Consultants Ltd offers striking proof of new design directions.
