Abstract
The French Government has been in the news a lot recently, and not for the right reasons. However, as far as the architecture profession is concerned, they've got their priorities right. Paris has been transformed by the series of Government-led Grands Projects instigated under Giscard D'Estaing and proliferated by President Mitterand. The programme has produced a number of brilliant / controversial / appalling developments (depending on your taste) such as the Louvre pyramid, the Grande Arche at La Defense, the Arab Institute and the huge park of La Villette. The mere fact that these structures have provoked such strong and varied reactions is testimony to their importance.
